    Notes
    • WALTER HAMILTON COWLES, son of Lemuel and Esther, was born on December 15, 1803 in Avon, CT.  He died February 7, 1888 at Hartford, CT (C-634).

He married Azuba Steadman, daughter of Martin Steadman of Berlin, CT. on July 10, 1822. She was born on May 1, 1794, and died on October 22, 1872 at the age of 82. She had light brown hair and light gray eyes. In her younger days she was known as a leading soprano singer, and it is claimed her mother was a cousin of Dr. Watts of hymnal fame. She later was a teacher, then a tailoress. (C-634)

Walter was a businessman, small of stature, but of great endurance, like his father for energy and business push.  He had dark hair and complexion and sharp gray eyes. He engaged in farming, until at the age of 42 he became a soap and candle manufacturer at Unionville, CT.  He moved to Hartford in Feburary of 1859 because business was doing so well he wanted better facilities.  He was very successful in Hartford and retired in 1865 from active business, but still did some real estate, loans, etc. (C-634/5)

He was a deacon in the Congregational Church for over 30 years, and a Republican, though never held any political office.  The graves of Walter and Azuba and sons James and Samuel are marked by a tall brownstone shaft in Spring Grove cemetery in Hartford, CT (C-635).

Walter and Azuba had four children: Lemuel Watts, James Perkins, Samuel Wallace, and Marietta (lived 18 mos.) (C-635).
