      Mary Ann Cheatham John Steadman
      1864 1947 1859 1924

      John, born Jan 26, 1859, York District, South Carolina, oldest child of John Bunion and Martha Sturgis Steadman, who migrated with father and others to Walker Co., Alabama in 1860. Mary Ann, born April 28, 1864, oldest daughter of James Wyatte and Lydia Ann Cheatham. Her Grandfather, Wyatte Duke, Sr. built and maintained Cheatham toll road from Tennessee to the Warrior Rivers through Walker County after Alabama was admitted as a State in 1819.

      Their fathers and uncles were Confederate Soldiers during the Civil War 1861-1864. They were married Dec 23, 1880. Built a home between parent's homes. Had many vocations, Farmer, Merchant,Contractor, Sawmill Operator, Coal Mine Prospector, and Live Stock Grower. Became Civic and church leaders in their respective parent's neighborhoods as leader of Sunday School and church. Attended one parent's church on Sunday Morning and the other parent's on Sunday Evening. Later built a church at their home for Sunday School and midweek Prayer Services. Ministers of all faiths were welcome in their home to conduct religious services at their respective churches in the area. She became a self trained Nurse and midwife, making her services free to all sick in the neighborhood. He was liberal in aiding the sick and needy from their store in times of misfortune or death.

      All nine children were given educational advantages above the local rural school. Many became teachers and business leaders.

      They made meals in the home very formal, children and employees knew to be prompt for meals. He kneeled at the head of an abundantly supplied table and rendered a prayer which she closed with a reverent AMEN.

      They chose to be buried here at Scott Cemetery near their home, where parents, grandparents, and many other family members are buried. Names of nine children appear on the back of this marker with spouses and number of Grandchildren.
