Notes |
- Charles Richard Kinder was born February 22, 1871 in Eureka, Gallia County, Ohio.
In 1894, he married Minnie Lee Ross. They were divorced March 29, 1913 in Monessen, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania.
On June 25, 1898, at age 27 - he enlisted and was inducted into the Army at Camp Bushnel l, Columbus, Ohio. He was assigned to Company C, 7th Regiment of the Ohio Voluntary Infantry (OVI). At that time his physical description was listed as 5 feet, 7 and one-half inches in height, dark complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair. His occupation was listed as being a teacher. (Weight was not listed but was most likely about 165).
NOTE: Total military service time was just less than 9 months. There were many volunteers who joined the Army to fight against the Spanish. They expected to go to Cuba, the Philippines, or Hawaii. The Spanish-American war didn't last long enough for many of the volunteers to see any action. The 7th Regiment, OVI left Camp Bushnell, Ohio during July of 1898 and were garrisoned at Camp Alger, Falls Church, Virginia for training. His Company arrived at Camp Alger on July 8, 1898. Sergeant Kinder was honorably discharged from the Army at Camp Bushnell, Columbus, Ohio on March 16, 1899.
On May 10, 1913 he married Abigail "Abbie" Stedman in Wheeling, West Virginia.
In his application for a military pension dated 20 July 1922, his occupation was listed as being a clerk. He was employed at the American Sheet & Tin Plate Company of Monessen, Pennsylvania. At that time it was documented that he suffered some degree of deafness and impaired vision.
On February 6, 1927 he was admitted to The Memorial Hospital of New Eagle, Pennsylvania. His address was listed as 117 Eighth Street, Monessen, Pennsylvania. He died the next evening at 9.45 p.m. Cause of death diagnosed as resulting from a brain tumor.
He was buried in Clay Chapel Cemetery, Eureka Ohio on 10 February 1927. His military tombstone was inscribed: Charles R . Kinder, SGT, 7 Ohio Inf, Spanish-American War. The tombstone had an erroneous date of death as Feb 17, 1917. This veteran tombstone has since been removed and his name is inscribed on a Kinder family stone. Buried in the Noah Kinder Plot in Clay Chapel Cemetery, Eureka, Ohio.
