    Notes
    • Captain Ephriam Cleveland dwelt first at Canterbury, and then in Windham. He was taken prisoner in the French war by the Indians, held captive 3 years and escaped.

He was in the Revolutionary army. During the Revolution, Ephriam and Mark Watkins were captured by Indians who pulled out all their hair, tied them to stakes and prepared to burn them. An old squaw who had befriended them interfered and by her entreaty the Indians let her have Ephriam in place of her son who was killed in the war. He and Watkins afterward often went hunting with the Indians and later were trusted to go alone a few times, and then escaped. From that time Ephraim was bald, and wore an eel-skin cap.

Ephriam removed from Connecticut to Massachusetts, thence to Ontario County, New York, soon after 1783, with his son Ephriam and was one of the first settlers on Naples; he lived on Naples Flats.

Ephraim Cleveland had a second wife, name unknown, married about 1819.
