Notes |
- William Jackson Forsyth (1814-1891) married Louisa Jane Ellen Steadman and lived on Back Street (now Wirt) opposite the Old Stone Church across the street from the cemetery at the intersection with Cornwall in Leesburg.
___________
The following notes are based on "Two Thousand Years of Forsyth History" compiled by William Henry Forsyth, great grand son of William Jackson Forsythe. He was recently deceased as of October 2008. This was provided to me by Marguerite Teska, of Leesburg.
He moved to Leesburg, Va. about 1842 and was first associated with the Steadman Cooperage Works, owned by James and John Steadman. He married Louisa Jane Ellen Steadman, daughter of John Steadman, on 11 December 1843.
He operated retail stores in Leesburg before and after the Civil War, and was also a toll collector on the ferry over the Goose Creek and several toll roads.
He enlisted on 25 August 1863 in the Loudoun Rangers and served until the end of the Civil War. This was the only group of Virginians attached to the Northern Army. He was injured in line of duty and in later years received a pension of $12 a month.
He was an inventor of sorts. He files an application for a patent on a car coupling in 1871, and obtained a patent on a washing machine in 1883. His personal papers indicate that he invented another device, and that he compounded several home remedies.
One of his homes was at the corner of Cornwall and Back (now Wirt) Streets in Leesburg which he purchased in 1852 for $800. Supposedly, it sold recently for $40,000.
Louisa Jane Ellen Steadman was born 30 April 1825 in Leesburg. She was the daughter of John Steadman and Margaret Wyckoff. THrough her mother, her ancestry is traced back through the Van Nesses, Van Arsdales, Strykers, Van Dorns, and Van Dykes to Nicassius de Sille, a Dutch Statesman, who with others created the Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1579. Louisa died 24 February 1890 and is buried beside her husband in the Union Cemetery in Leesburg.
