I have collected family information for many years and am now ready to create order out of my stacks of paper.

      My grandparents are:

Edwin McQueen Rogers, 1879 to 16 Feb 1947, Lake City SC

Alice Mary Ann Huggins, 18 Jan 1889 to 26 Jul 1958
      Williamsburg, Co SC

Thomas Calvin Taylor, 1885 to 1946, Lexington, Co, SC

Alice Louise Steadman, 1883 to , Lexington, Co, SC

Your name was referred to me by David Stidham, as some one who might be able to help me identify my GG Grandfathers parents. I have solid information up to my GGGF, but zero beyond him.

      Jonathin G. Steadman b. 07 Apr 1821, d. 05 Jan 1893

      Lavicy(Vicy) Creed b. 21 Jul 1818, d. 04 May 1891

      Son(My GGF) Lucious Patrick Steadman b. 31 Jul 1858 d. 05 Jan 1939

Both are buried at Tabernacle Church, SE Aiken, Co., SC

According to my grandmothers records, her father Lucious Patrick Steadman had the following sons:

      Earl b. 16 Jul 1887
      Grady b. 12 Nov 1889 d. 18 Nov 1924
      Frank b. 30 Mar 1893 d. 29 Apr 1912
      Paul b. 08 Aug 1898

JG was in the Confederate Army

The few census records I have found place them in the Aiken/Barnwell, SC area.

There is a Jonathan G. Steedman, born 1810, from a prominent family. Many leads go back to the 1810 JG. This is definitely not my 1821 JG.

Thank you for any leads you can provide.

Checking the history of Tabernacle church, I see that blacks were accepted into the church and dismissed by letter or excommunicated.

I am posting info and pic of Steadman marker on findagrave.com.

Tabernacle history mentions the following Steadmans in the list of members:

      Lucious Stedman - Baptised 14 Sep 1893 and dismissed 3 Jan 1903
Masuria Stedman - by letter 7 Oct 1893 and dismissed 3 Jan 1903
Alice Steadman - by letter 14 Jul 1895 and dismissed 3 Jan 1903
      Cora Steadman - Baptised 10 Aug 1900 and dismissed 3 Jan 1903
      Erly Steadman - Baptised 9 Aug 1901 and dismissed 3 Jan 1903
      Grady Steadman - Baptised 9 Aug 1901 and dismissed 3 Jan 1903

I don't know if it is of interest to you, but Denmark Cemetery in Bamberg Co. also has a few Steadman graves. I'll see about posting them also to findagrave.com.

I hope this is of some help,
      _______________

The history of Tabernacle that I have mentions that the church was open to black people along with the whites. During the years of slavery there are a few lists of slaves being baptised. I have a list from 1832 that has a few slaves names and who they "belonged" to. Now the question is "Would they have been allowed to be buried at the cemetery is they were known to be black?" I'll check with a friend whose family history runs deep in the Tabernacle church and see what he says.
      _______________

Info about Tabernacle from friend -

He remembered his father telling him that at one time there was a balcony in the church where the Black members sat. His father pointed out to him that a lot of Black members were buried at the back of the cemetery, out in the now woods, but he had never looked for any markers back there.

The Steadman marker that I visited there is at front of church.
