    Notes
    • (Research):WHEN DID JANE GOODHUE, HIS FIRST WIFE, DIE?  Marsden married Olive about 1888, probably in Minnesota.  This means Jane probably died before 1888, or that they separated/divorced.  She was alive in 1865, as listed on the state census, but not living with Marsden in 1885 when he was listed on a state census, alone. Check death records in Minnesota.

WHO IS OLIVE, MARSDEN'S 2nd WIFE?  She was born Apr 1834 in Vermont.  Marsden and Olive married about 1888, according to the 1900 census.  Check marriage records in Minnesota, probably Crow Wing County.

A marriage certificate was found for Marsden BROWN to Ellen CRANDALL or RANDALL, married 24 Apr 1888 in Brainerd, Crow Wing, Minnesota.  Is Ellen the same person as Olive?  The marriage date would seem right, based on the 1900 census entry.  Marsden was living in Crow Wing County by 1890, according to the 1890 veteran schedule, so there is little doubt that this is a different Marsden.  Check the Seattle, Washington city directories for 1909 on, searching for Ellen Brown, possible widow of Marsden.  This would suggest that Marsden died in Seattle about 1908/09.

Is CRANDALL or RANDALL Ellen's maiden name?  Because of their age, she was probably married previously.  The witnesses to their marriage are ___ Wilkins and R. R. Wilkins.  Learn who these people are.

      Ellen/Olive CRANDALL/RANDALL in the 1880 census:

She is possibly listed in Milton, Dodge, Minnesota (page 293B), as Olive CRANDALL:

W.C. CRANDALL, self, age 52, NY, father RI, mother NY
Olive CRANDALL, wife, age 43, VT, parents born in VT
      Children:
         Frank, age 21
         George, age 19
         Willie, age 12
         Emma, age 9
         Nellie, age 7

Olive would have been born abt 1837 in Vermont.  My information is Apr 1834 in Vermont.

In 1900, she is the mother of 9 children, 6 living.  This census has five children.

Learn about this family.  Quite possibly, this Olive is the 2nd wife of Joshua Marsden BROWN.

      W. C. CRANDALL quite possibly served in the Civil War.  He would have been age 33 at the outbreak, a perfect age.  His children listed in the 1880 census were born 1859, 1861, 1868, 1871, and 1873.  His service in the war could explain the seven-year gap between the 2nd and 3rd child.  If his wife, Olive, is indeed the identical Olive that married Marsden BROWN, then W. C. CRANDALL would have had to died between 1873 (last child) and 1888 (Olive/Ellen's marriage to Marsden).  His pension papers would probably include a widow's application for Olive, and it would also indicate if she married again (presumably to Marsden BROWN).  Send for W. C. CRANDALL's pension papers.  First find out his first name.

The 1870 Census listed W. C. CRANDALL and his family living in Pine Island, Goodhue, Minnesota.  Goodhue County (1870 census) is just south of Dakota County, where the family was in the 1880 census.  This census adds additional children to possibly complete the family.  The key thing here is that now W. C. and Olive have 9 children together.  The 1900 census for Olive (married to Marsden BROWN) says that she has 9 children.

The 1860 census listed Willard CRANDALL and his family living in Holden, Goodhue, Minnesota.  This is the first occurence of W. C. CRANDALL's given name.  An additional child is introduced here, a Jennitt, age 2, born in Minnesota.  This brings the total children to 10 - our first contradictory piece of evidence.

Now that Willard's given name is known, research can go forward.  First, a message posted to Ancestry.com's message boards at http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/message/an/localities.northam.usa.states.minnesota.counties.crowwing/132 on 20 Jun 1999, by Nancy Newman , states, "Researching Gould family.  Great grandmother was Olive Gould b 1835 Vt. father George Gould mother Mary Daniels.  Several sisters and brothers.  Marr. Willard C. Crandall in Wisconsin abt 1854.  Remarried Wm. M. Brown and was living in Brainerd abt 1885-95 or so.  Links to Goodhue Cty., Dodge Cty, and Hubbard Cty.  Olive had several children and dau. who married an Adams was also living in Brainerd abt. same time.  Have lots of info to share and lots of questions to ask.  Any info would be much appreciated."  Many items are striking here.  1) Olive's maiden name is possibly GOULD.  She remarried Wm. M. Brown and was living in Brainerd, which is in Crow Wing County about 1885-1895.  Who is Wm. M.?  Possibly it's Marsden BROWN.  I emailed her, asking for the source she used which listed this possible marriage.  Also, Crow Wing County is a key.  This is where Marsden was living in 1890, and where he married "Ellen CRANDALL" in 1888 in Brainerd.

A GEDCOM database at Ancestry.com, submitted by Margaret Lambert , last updated 26 Aug 2000, lists Willard Crafts CRANDALL's death date as 20 Nov 1907 in Pine Island, Goodhue, Minnesota.  If this is true, and Olive remarried to Marsden BROWN in 1888, then Willard and Olive must have divorced/separated.  This could be the reason Olive went so far north in Minnesota, and ended up in Crow Wing County.  This can probably be cleared up by locating Willard in the 1900 census, probably in Goodhue County, Minnesota.  If Olive is not living with him in this census, and Willard is listed as divorced, then Olive is probably identical to the Olive living with Marsden BROWN in the 1900 census of Seattle, King, Washington.

1900 Census for Willard CRANDALL: Indeed, Willard was found living alone, divorced, in the 1900 census of Todd Township, Hubbard, Minnesota.  This means that Olive is no longer married to him, so she must be somewhere else.  Most likely in Seattle, Washington.

Another clue to Olive GOULD's second husband came from an online article at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~whosefamilyisit/williamames.htm, written by Irene Clough Hahn .  Here, she explains that Sarah Jane AMES is the wife of Frank Oliver CRANDALL, son of Willard Crafts CRANDALL and Olive GOULD.  She also writes that "Next to Sarah and Frank's graves are his mother Olive Goud [sic] Crandall Brown and Olives' second husband William Marsden Brown."  The middle name of Marsden is extremely interesting.  Again though, where did the given name of William come from?  Ask Mrs. Hahn.

Now that we know a possible location of Marsden BROWN's burial, in Hubbard County, Minnesota, a search of the death records in that county was performed.  An online index of death records is located at the Hubbard County, Minnesota USGenWeb project site.  Sure enough, an entry was located for Marsden BROWN, died 17 Sep 1911, certificate number D-67-1.  His death certificate was ordered.  If the information on this certificate matches with the definitive information on Marsden, then we know that we have our man!  Marsden's death record lists his age as 78, which would make his birth year 1833, the correct year for my Marsden.   Born in Massachusetts, which conflicts and his occupation was carpenter.  The occupation matches my Marsden Brown.  I'm guessing that he did not have close relatives living nearby at the time of death, so they most likely guessed his birth place.  Also, the fact that the parents were listed as unknown on the death record suggests that there was no close family.  Could this be why the grave marker is listed as Wm. Marsden Brown?  Because they knew Marsden was a middle name, and weren't sure of the first name?  I still tend to believe his official given name is Joshua, as this is what his pension papers suggest, and what the 1871 Minneapolis, Minnesota city directory suggests, where it lists him as J. Marsden Brown.  Nancy has found no other record that suggests his given name is William.

Next, if Marsden and Olive can be located in the 1910 census, this would give more information with which to compare Olive's 1900 census, where she was living in Seattle, marred to Marsden.  If the 1910 matches with the 1900, then this is stronger evidence that the 1910 couple is the same as the 1900 couple.  Searched Hubbard County, with no success.

Nancy Newman wrote that Willard and Olive CRANDALL's daughter, Nellie May/Mae CRANDALL married William BROWN, a son of Marsden BROWN.  The Hubbard County, Minnesota marriage index lists a Nellie May CRANDALL married to James Vergil MEAD on 30 Apr 1911 in Hubbard County, Minnesota.  If this is the identical Nellie, daughter of Willard and Olive, AND she actually married to a William BROWN, her marriage to William would have been much later, as her marriage record to James MEAD lists her maiden name, and not BROWN.

Marsden's obituary: the ONE paper that was missing was the one in which Marsden's obituary would have been published.  The Minnesota Historical Society microfilmed the Park Rapids Enterprise, and the originals are no longer available.

Loring Brown's Social Security Application ties this whole case together.  It lists his name as Loring Marsden BROWN, born 9 Nov 1887 in Brainerd, Crow Wing, Minnesota.  The parents are listed as William C. Brown (son of Marsden and Jane) and Nellie Crandell (daughter of Willard).  Nancy Newman wrote that "Nellie Crandall married Marsden's son, William."  So, because Loring Brown is a proven grandson of Geoff's Marsden Brown, and was living with Marsden and Olive in the 1900 census in Seattle, Washington, and his mother was Nellie Crandall, this ties the Marsden Brown who lived in Seattle with the Marsden Brown who died in Hubbard County, Minnesota.  They are the same Marsden!

      TO DO:
      1) Check for obituaries for Olive BROWN and Marsden BROWN.
      2) Check probate indexes for Olive BROWN and Marsden BROWN.
      3) Check cemetery records for Wm. Marsden BROWN.

IS CHARLES W. BROWN, SON OF MARSDEN THE SAME PERSON AS WILLIAM C. BROWN, SON OF MARSDEN AND FATHER OF LORING MARSDEN BROWN?  Probably.  Actually, probably not. Charles W. Brown was born abt 1860. William Clark Brown's 1937 death certificate gives his birth date as June 11, 1863, the son of Marsden and Jane Brown. William was buried in the same cemetery that his father, Marsden was buried in - Greenwood Cemetery in Park Rapids, Hubbard County.

WHEN DID MARSDEN COME TO SEATTLE?  He is first found in the Seattle city directories in 1899 living at 1605 23d av.  Found in the 1900 city directory, suggests that he will have an entry in the 1900 census.  The soundex card lists his name as Marden Brown.

WHO IS LORING BROWN?  The 1906 Seattle, Washington city directory, in which Marsden Brown is listed as living at 235 29th av N, lists a Loring Brown, drive Marsden Brown b 235 29th av N.  What connection is Loring to Marsden?  According to the 1900 census, Loring is living with Marsden and Olive.  He is Marsden's grandson.  He was born Nov 1890 in Minnesota.

The Social Security Death Index lists his birth as 9 Nov 1889, and his death in Jan 1966.  His residence at time of death was Glenwood City, Saint Croix, Wisconsin, and his social security number was issued in Minnesota.  The Wisconsin state death index reports his death as 31 Jan 1966 in Sauk County.

Loring's obituary inferred that he was an only child, with 4 step-brothers and 2 step-sisters. The informant on his death certificate was Ross Brown, listed as a half-brother. One of his step-sisters was Lilly Eichelberger. The Social Security Death Index lists 2: born 12 Mar 1910, died Dec 1980 in Columbus, Ohio; born 16 Jun 1886, died Aug 1979 in Boise, Idaho. If she was the second person, then it is possible that Loring was the son of a second marriage. If she was the first person, then he is probably a son of a first marriage.

WHEN DID JOSHUA MARSDEN DIE?  He was last found in the 1908 Seatlte city directory, and his last civil war document was dated 8 Oct 1908, living at 235 29th Ave. No. in Seattle.  There is no directory in Seattle for 1909, and he's not listed in the 1910 directory, nor is his wife, Olive as a widow.  This suggests that 1) they both died between 1908-1910 or that they moved out of the area after 1908.  Check the Washington state death index.  Or possbily they moved back to Minnesota.
