Notes |
- Oliver Hazard Perry Stedman resided near Lee, Massachusetts where "Stedman Brook" is named after him.
From a note by J. J. DeMott:
"Byron Stedman recalled, in 1921, that he called upon this Uncle Oliver -- "Commy" -- and saw both him and his wife.
"The fact that this Oliver Hazard Perry Stedman was so named gives color to the persistent tradition that the Commodore was a "cousin" of some of the Stedmans of this line. Color is given to this story by marriages between the Perry famile of Rhode island and early Stedmans there; also by possible connections between the Stedmans of Rhode Island and the Hazard family. But, as of 1951, the cousin relationship has not been verified."
"Oliver P. Stedman and Ward Lewis were lumber dealers. They operated a portable steam saw-mill. Oliver also was a carriage painter and owned a house and lot. He also sold furnaces which he built. " (Child's Berkshire County Gazetteer, in section on Lee and Lenox)
Oliver apparently went to California in the Gold Rush, perhaps at the same time as his brother Robert. In the book "Argonauts of California" by Haskins, p. 421, lists O(liver) H(azard) Steadman, sailed from New York Harbor on ship Samoset and arrived in San Francisco on March 21, 1849.
Both Robert and Oliver are listed in Lenox in the 1850 Census.
In Lenoxdale, Massachetts, the Hotel Eldorado was built in the early 1850s by Oliver and Robert Stedman on their return from the Gold Rush of 1849 in California.
Bertha Stedman Rothwell visited the Eldorado Hotel in 1947. This is a from a letter to J. J. DeMott:
"After getting the outside pictures that I am enclosing, I told Lily that I was going to see the inside. Charles went in with me but Lily is so lame she did not try the four steps to enter. The owner was not in but when I explained to his wife what I wished to see, she said, "It does seem as though you have been sent here to answer what we wanted to know." She said that less than two weeks before a man from a newspaper came and wanted to write it up for a story. She took me all through it and showed us where there had been any improvements put in. It is mostly in the original state. They had taken the partition out between the original dining room and the hotel parlor. They have laid a nice dance floor over the original floor as they cater to parties and banquets. The kitchen is a big one, about 20 by 14 foot and had the original sink. An old iron one with large and long drain boards on each side. Two large ranges for cooking. The she took us through a small parlor that I imagine was the family private parlor. It had a large fire place with an immense stone hearth. The woodwork on the mantle was all hand carved and the picture molding about the room was all hand carved. It had wide oak floors throughout the building. The front doorway you can see was a work of superior workmanship. She said her husband, a Mr. O'Brien, said that the place was built very substantially. They seem to be trying to keep it in its original condition. The doorway to the left of the picture opens into the bar. The original bar fully 30 foot long is still in use as a cocktail bar. Across the street was an old delapidated blacksmith shop. I got a picture of it too as I have heard my father tell so often of his hitching four bobsleds together and he steered some twenty children down the hill and when he saw it was either an old large tree or the blacksmith shop he choose the later and went in the open door and straight through the opposite wall into a snow bank. None of them were hurt."
