Stedman History
Stedman Foundry and Machine Company was established in 1834 in Rising Sun, Indiana by Nathan Stedman to produce castings for cotton gins, disintegrators and other equipment related to the agriculture industry. In 1840, the company was moved to Aurora, Indiana.
Nathan Stedman is credited with inventing the cage mill; and in 1894, a U.S. patent was granted to Stedman Foundry and Machine Company for Mr. Stedman's invention.
Over the years, the firm's growth found the machinery division's product line expanded to include crushing, pulverizing, disintegrating, mixing and screening equipment for the fertilizer, chemical, meat packing, crushed stone, sand and gravel, glass, precious metals, clay processing, reclaim, recycle and wood industries. Castings were manufactured for the machine tool, pump and valve, printing press, cotton gin, blower, electric motor, power transmission and tool and die equipment manufacturers.
The Stedman Family operated the business for three generations. In 1912, a group of three Cincinnati, Ohio investors acquired the business.
On October 12, 1949, the United Engineering and Foundry Company purchased Stedman. The parent company merged with Wean Industries, Inc., in 1968; and Stedman became a Wean-United Company.
Due to the expenditures required to bring the foundry into conformance with EPA, OSHA and other agency regulations, the foundry was no longer economically feasible to continue. On June 20, 1980, after 146 years of continuous service, the foundry operations were terminated. With the machinery division now representing the firm's total activity, the organization became known as Stedman Machine Company, Inc.
September 1, 1990, the company was purchased by Eagle Crusher Company, Galion, Ohio. Stedman is a division of Eagle Crusher Company and operates as Stedman Machine Company. The plant continues manufacturing operations on 4 acres with 24,000 sq. feet for manufacturing and 5000 sq. feet for stocking parts. The manufacturing facilities are located on Indiana Avenue, Aurora, Indiana.
