    • DIED. At Baltimore the 17th ult. after a short but severe illness, supported with exemplary fortitude, and christian patience, Mr. John Stedman, formerly of Boston, and only brother of Mr. Ebenezer Stedman of this town --- aged 27.

"To those who had not the happiness of being benefited by the virtues, and good example of this young man, it may be useful to remark, that he bore the highest testimony of merit in universal esteem and affection of those who knew him, that his conduct was so blameless, and his life so innocent, that he passed thro' the world without an enemy; that in his principles as a citizen, he was guided by a love of his country, and in his behavior in private life regulated by a love of virtue; that he was free from pride which corrupts the heart, and the meanness which debases it, that he walked with honest uprighness in the middle path of life, and to crown his character, that he was an exemplary son to an aged mother.

"To thise who were acquainted with his virtues, little consolation can be offered; for such a loss is not to be supplied: the life which rendered theirs pleasant, is at an end, the grave renders not up his victim, and little remains their but languishment and regret.

"The blameless life, the artless tenderness, the meek submition, and patient resignation, are now only remembered to aggravate our loss, and increase our regret, for what annot be recalled.

"This is the great occasion on which a wounded spirit can only find consolation in Religion; for how but by looking beyond the grave, and reposing with resignation upon the goodness and justice of his dispensations who out of evil bringeth good, can patience under a loss, which this world remedieth not, be found?

"Let religion then console those to whom he was endeared, not only by friendship, but by the ties of blood -- and let them recollect, that "Death is kind nature's signal for retreat." and "bids the pur in heart hehold their God!"
