    Steadman, Thomas Herbert

Steadman, Thomas Herbert, Solicitor, Whangarei. Mr. Steadman was born in Kent, England, in 1862, and came with his parents to New Zealand in 1863, landing in Auckland. He was educated at the Auckland College and Grammar School, and succeeded in winning two scholarships. On leaving college he was for several years in the Government survey office, and in 1881, decided to study for the law. Entering Mr. William Thorne's office he passed all the necessary examinations in 1884 and settled at Whangarei, where he went into partnership with the well-known solicitors, Messrs. Hughes and George. After Mr. Hughes' death he successfully managed the business until he ultimately took it over on his sole account. Mr. Steadman is very popular in the district. He is a Freemason and holds office as senior warden, is also an enthusiastic yachtsman, and as an amateur photographer has taken many splendid local views. He has been captain of the Whangarei Rifle Club since its formation, is a good shot, and has attended many of the New Zealand Rifle Association's meetings, at which he has been well up on the list for the championship, and has carried off many valuable prizes.

Steadman, seedsman of this city:- "Yesterday morning a very pleasant social event occurred in this city, the uniting in holy bonds of matrimony of Mr Montague B. Steadman, private secretary to David Jacks, Esq., our local millionaire, and Miss Dolly Gregg, youngest daughter of J. W. Gregg, Esq. At ten o'clock the wedding party assembled in the residence of Mr Gregg in Franklin street. The bride was supported by Miss Abrahams, of San Francisco, as chief bridesmaid, Mr. J. Z. Watson officiating as best man for the handsome groom. The guests were few in number, only the most intimate friends being present. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. H. S. Snodgrass, Presbyterian minister. The happy couple departed by the afternoon train to spend their honeymoon at Santa Cruz."

PRETTY VERA STEDMAN LEAVES MOVIES -- TWINS

Vera Steadman, Christie comedy star, who is known in private life as Mrs. Jackie Taylor, is the mother of twin girls, Frances and Marie, born October 7. One of the daughter is named for Marie Prevost, another film star, who is a lifelong friend of Miss Steadman's.

Vers Steadman has been in more than fifty Christie comedies, appearing principally opposite Bobby Vernon. She was recently in "Oh Buddy", with Neal Burns, and will also be seen with Vernon in "Exit Quietly." She declares that she will come back to the screen some time later, but that just now the twins will take every minute of her time. Silent Film Beauty Is Seriously Hurt

HOLLYWOOD, Jan 23 (AP) Vera Steadman, one of the most glamorous of the silent film stars in in serious condition today, her back broken. She was struck by an automobile and thrown in front of another machine, which also hit her.

In Beverly Hills Emergency Hospital, Dr. Robert W. Flak reported her condition, "Critical," and the former Monterey bathing beauty was removed to Monte Sano Hospital

Miss Steadman was returning home from a shopping trip when she was hit by an automobile driven by Dr. Ralph Opdyke, 71. She was hurled in front of another car, driven by Oscar E. Hansen, 50, and was struck again. Neither driver was held.

The actress was an overnight success in the early day movies, playing the part of a Mack Sennett bathing beauty. She became a full fledged star during the twenties and at the peak of her career made a protracted trip to Europe. When she returned she found the Hollywood of her era displaced by talking pictures.

She retired shortly thereafter and married Martin Padway, Beverly Hills socialite lawyer, in April 1935. Two years later she was found quietly plugging away at a screen comeback, but her effort gained her nothing. Her first husband was Jackie Tayler, orchestra leader, whom she divorced in 1923.

    Sennett-Era Actress Vera Steadman Dies

A funeral was held today for Vera Steadman Flynn, former Mack Sennett bathing beauty and Christy Comedy leading lady, a resident of the Long Beach area for 50 years. Mrs. Flynn, of 5419 Laria St., died Wednesday in St. Mary's Hospital at the age of 65.

The rite was held in the Salvation Army Social Center Chapel, 1970 Alamitos St., with Lt. Col. Ranson D. Gifford officiating, and Mottell's Mortuary in charge. Mrs. Flynn had devoted her free time to the Salvation Army in Long Beach for the past 13 years.

Born in Monterey, Vera Steadman rose to fame with the Mack Sennett girls in the early 20s and went on leading roles in the 30s.

Lt. Col. Gifford recalled the first time the former star walked into the Salvation Army office in Long Beach 13 years ago and said: "I have tasted fame and fortune, I have traveled the world over. I wish to dedicate my remaining years in service to humanity. Perhaps I could be of some assistance to the Salvation Army."

Frail in health, she did many things for the Army, officials say, and asked that her contributions not be publicized.

Surviving are her husband, Joseph Flynn; a daughter, Mrs. Marie Harris of Northridge; brother, Monte Steadman of Wrightwood, and three grandchildren.

Interment in Sunnyside Memorial Park followed the Service of Remembrance.

Resident of Millbrae, California Formerly of Marin, Santa Clara, Mendocino & Sonoma Counties August 27, 1920-May 26, 2010

Dr. Monte Gregg Steadman died peacefully at home in Millbrae at age 89.

Dr. Steadman will be remembered as a renowned surgeon, an excellent teacher, and a dedicated advocate for peace and social justice. Dr. Steadman's illustrious medical career spanned more than 50 years. He graduated from University of Southern California School of Medicine in 1946, and was one of the first interns serving at Permanente Hospital in Oakland (now Kaiser Foundation Hospital). In 1951, he became the first full-time otolaryngologist for the Permanente Medical Group in San Francisco, and served as Chief of the Department of Otolaryngology at Kaiser Foundation Hospital on Geary Blvd. until 1969. He continued his career in Redwood City as Senior Consultant in Otolaryngology until he retired from Kaiser in 1982. Dr. Steadman's surgical skills were renowned; many patients with advanced cancers of the head and neck were referred to him from all the Kaiser Health Plan facilities. He continued to assist and consult on complex surgeries until 1996. He volunteered his services at the Mendocino Coast Clinic in Fort Bragg, CA, Alliance Medical Center in Healdsburg, CA, and in the Department of Head and Neck Surgery at Kaiser in Santa Rosa, where he finally ended his medical career, caring for patients with non-surgical problems until 2007. Dr. Steadman was an excellent teacher, highly revered by the many medical students, interns and residents he taught during his career at Kaiser, and also at the University of California Medical Center in San Francisco, Stanford Medical Center and the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Palo Alto, CA. He was awarded Clinical Professor Emeritus status at Stanford in 1990.

Throughout his life, Dr. Steadman supported and participated in peace and social justice movements. In 1962, at the height of the Cold War, he and two other peace activists, Franklin Zahn and George Benello, sailed a 28-foot ketch named Everyman II into the nuclear testing zone around Johnston Island. The purpose of this act of nonviolent civil disobedience was to prevent the Atomic Energy Commission from proceeding with a new series of atmospheric nuclear bomb tests and to end the nuclear arms race. At this time, nuclear bomb tests were being carried out by the US and USSR to advance the development of more and more powerful nuclear weapons. Tons of radioactive material spewed into the atmosphere caused a near doubling of the concentration of the radioactive isotope Carbon-14 in the Northern Hemisphere, and worldwide concern over the harmful effects of radiation on all life was very high. Although their boat was seized and removed from the test zone, and the bomb tests went off as planned, their bold action drew attention to the grave health risks of nuclear fallout and the dangers inherent in the rapidly escalating nuclear arms race. The following year, the Partial Test Ban Treaty, developed to stop the excessive release of radioactive fallout into the atmosphere and to slow the arms race, was signed by the US, UK and USSR.

Dr. Steadman was also a great athlete. He attended UCLA on a track scholarship, and played on the varsity football team in 1939 with Jackie Robinson. He was an avid handball player, competing in tournaments well into his 60's.

He enjoyed commuting to work on his motorcycle, and backpacking in the Sierras with his first wife, Frances Hobson Steadman of Corte Madera, and their four children. Dr. Steadman is predeceased by his second wife, Edna Indritz Steadman, and his oldest son, Brian.

He is survived by his sons, Gary (Genie) of Corte Madera, Roger (Margaret) of Kelseyville, his daughter Marcia of San Mateo, six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Assistance Dog Institute (1215 Sebastopol Road, Santa Rosa, CA 95407) or the Community Network for Appropriate Technologies would be greatly appreciated. Dr. Steadman served as President of the Board of Directors for the Community Network from 2001 to 2006, promoting the development and utilization of palliative care and good end-of-life care planning (P.O. Box 2331, Santa Rosa, CA 95405 or www.caringcommunity.org/communitynetwork).

A memorial service for Dr. Steadman will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, July 17, 2010 at the Glaser Center/Unitarian Universalist Congregation, Santa Rosa, 547 Mendocino Avenue, Santa Rosa, CA 95401.
