Notes:
William Lisle was born about 28 November 1818; however this is an estimate. Based on the early census years, it could be about 1817 or 1818. In the book " A Centennial Biographical History of the City of Columbus and Franklin County, Ohio", he gives his birth as 8 November 1808 which is clearly not possible given the census data or the date of the marriage of his parents. The year 1812 is on his tombstone. 24 June 1813 from a calculation of his age and from death date from death records of the probate court. That death record gives his age as 88 yr 5 mo 2 days.
William Lisle worked for his Uncle, Robert Lisle. He rented land. After his father died in 1845, he found himself owner of the greater part of the homestead, having purchased the interests of the other heirs. A brother-in-law would not sell, and he forced him off through the courts. He remained on the homestead for 2 yrs., then sold the property to his brothers John and Robert. He purchased the Henry Adams farm in the western part of Prairie Twp. Later, he purchased another 125 acres from George Dugan, and 100 acres later from Mr. Sullivan, and 18 1/2 acres from the Granner farm. At times he added other small unclaimed tracts. He also purchased 28 acres of the Wallace survey and a tract from Squire Cole, which now formed the Lisle Homestead. In 1900 he owned 325 acres.

Hon. James Lisle, M.D.
... William Lisle, father of our subject, was born in Franklin County, Ohio, in 1806, and was reared upon a farm, attending the pioneer schools of those days. [NOTE - William was not born in 1806. Although there seems to be a discrepancy about the date, it seems likely that it was about 1818.]
When a young man he went on foot to the Mississippi River, thence by boat to New Orleans, and from there returned north to Nauvoo, Hancock County, Illinois. Purchasing a horse at that place he completed the homeward journey on horseback. This extended trip was made with a view to securing another location, but he returned content to make the Buckeye State his permanent home.
Prior to the journey William Lisle had worked by the year at twenty five cents per day. On his return home he married Miss Sarah McWilliams, and settled on rented land ten miles west of Columbus, meantime also tilling his father's farm. After some years spent as a renter, he purchased property, and is now the owner of four farms. The home place consists of over three hundred acres of valuable, well improved land, and is one of the best estates in the county. In early life, while associated with his brother in the livestock business, he twice failed, but since then has been very successful in that department of agriculture.
Politically, William Lisle is a democrat, and for twenty five years served as Township Trustee. He is a believer in the Christian religion, but is not a member of any church. He and his devoted wife have shared each other's joys and lightened each other's sorrows for almost a half century, and are now spending their declining days in quiet retirement. They have had six sons and two daughters, namely Estella, who died in Franklin County; Zadoc, who died at the age of twenty-eight; Osmer, who passed away when three years old; John, a physician of Columbus; our subject; Lewis who is engaged in medical practise at Celina, Ohio; Delia, wife of Harry Hubbard, of Columbus, and George who resides on the home farm.

Notes:
John Mac Lisle was probably born in 1846 at the farm which his father William was leasing in Prairie Twp. Shortly afterwards, his father assumed ownership of his grandfather James Lisle's farm in Hamilton Twp and they lived there until it was sold to Robert and John Lisle in 1849. At that time, the family purchased land in Alton in Prairie Twp and moved there. He and his family were recorded in the 1850, 1860, and 1870 Federal Census in Prairie Twp. He attended common schools in Prairie Twp.
Claiming to be 18 years old, he enlisted as a Private in Company G. of the 88th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment on 1 March 1864. He was mustered out with his company on 3 July 1865.
After serving in the Civil War, he graduated from Hiram College and then studied medicine at the Starling Medical College in Columbus, graduating in 1875 with a degree of Doctor of Medicine.
After graduating he removed to Roseville in Perry County to practice. Whilst there, he met Eva Gates whom he married in a Prebyterian ceremony presided over by the Rev H. H. Beeman in her parent's home in Saltillo on Wednesday, 27 Dec 1875 at 7:00 p.m. Their first child, Leslie Mac Lisle, was born there on 10 Mar 1877.
By the time of the birth of their second child, Dallas Gypsi Lisle, on 1 July 1878, they had moved to Pataskala in Licking County. Their third child, Thomas Gates Lisle, was also born there on 8 Feb 1881. Their neighbors in Pataskala were the Rev. Thomas P. Kohr and his wife Adele (Coe).
On 1 July 1882 Eva gave birth to twins Alice and Allen Lisle. As with the other instances of boy/girl twins running through the Wigton / Gates / Lisle line, they were not healthy and they died six weeks later on 11 Aug 1882. This tragedy had a profound effect on the family. Eva contracted tuberculosis (consumption) and went down hill steadily over then next year, and she died on 26 Sept 1883 at age 29.
The effect of Eva's death on John and his family was longlasting. Eva's aunt Victoria Gates Nagel came to help take care of the children. Eventually, the children lived with her for a while. Dallas remained with her a least though high school. I believe that the boys Leslie and Tom spent time with her, on the farm at Alton, and some time with their father up until the time he moved back to Columbus about 1895.
After Eva's death, he removed to Marysville in Union County where he practiced medicine, but his children lived elsewhere. His neighbors from Pataskala must have comforted him by introducing him to Adele Kohr's young widowed sister Martha ("Mattie") Coe Schoonover. Mattie's husband had died in 1882. Rev. Kohr married them in Franklin Co. on 15 October 1884. Family records indicate that John and Eva's children did not live with them.
After his second marriage, John continued to practice medicine. John and Mattie had their only child, Marguerite, in Celina, Mercer County, OH, on 6 July 1888.
It is not known for sure when John and Mattie moved to Columbus. However, it seems that they bought their house at 224 Tenth Ave. about 1895. City Directories from that period begin to list him there.
By 1900, Leslie and Tom are living there and attending college at Ohio State. In addition to practicing medicine, John and his brothers James and Lewis seem to have done a number of real estate investments.
Towards the end of his life, John and Mattie spent much of their winters somewhere in Florida, and they had a summer home in Michigan. He died about 6 weeks after returning from a trip to Florida in his home in Columbus from a heart problem on 4 May 1916.
His funeral was held in the family home on Saturday morning, 6 May 1916, with the Rev. William M. Hindeman officiating. He was buried next to his wife Eva in the Lisle family plot in Alton Cemetery.
He was a lifelong devout Presbyterian and was a member of the Northminster Presbyterian Church in Columbus. For 30 years he served as an elder. He was a member of the Columbus Academy of Medicine and a Mason.

Notes:
After Thomas Gates Lisle graduated from Ohio State University, he and a partner went into business in Houston, Texas. The business failed when Tom's partner took away all of the business's money and left. They hired Artemesia Davidson of Houston to work for them as a secretary. In 1910, Tom married Artemesia. Because of the business failure, Tom took a job in Birmingham, Alabama, where their first son Thomas Davidson Lisle was born in 1911. Shortly afterwards, Tom and his family moved back to Ohio where eventually he bought a variety store in Clyde, Ohio, about 1915. Herbert Lisle was born at their home on Buckeye Street in Clyde in 1916. Sometime later, the Lisles moved into an apartment over the store on Main Street in Clyde.
